Kói / 00 Photozine now available
The first Kói Creative photography collection to go on general sale is now available as a limited edition photozine, stocked online at Unitom and physically in the store at Stevenson Sq. Manchester.

This edition features a collection of the studio's work through summer 2026, focused on the industrial-era architecture of Liverpool, Manchester and Salford. Ostensibly noir in style, the concept here is all about isolation; abstracting buildings into dystopian monolithic geometries, crushing shadows into deep black-points, allowing harsh sunlight to form graduated skies and punctuated highlights within the shadows. The malevolence of the landscape is isolated and allowed to loom heavy over the cities below. The title, Zero No Shōten, refers back to Seicho Matsumoto's 1959 classic noir novel of the same name, later made into the 1961 movie 'Zero Focus' directed by Yoshitaro Nomura.

Thematically this is continued in the zine's graphic design. Images are presented within a layout derived from vintage Japanese technical manuals. Reference points here were derived from genuine mid-century engineering documentation produced by Nikon, Seiko, Fujica and Toyota. Behind this stylistic choice lies the concept of monozukuri; literally meaning 'manufacturing', but carrying a more significant meaning. It's a concept which represents quality, expertise, innovation, craft in execution and pursuit of excellence. The parallels between North-West industrial architecture and this Japanese concept which came to dominate late-20th century technology are expressions of the same underlying drive for engineering perfection.
Accordingly within the publication, you'll find exposure and depth-of-field reference tables for one of the ultimate expressions of the monzukuri product ethos, the Nikon F 35mm SLR camera, and 2 of the films most associated with its defining photojournalism work of the 60s and 70s - Ilford HP5 and Kodak Tri-X 400.
Included also are reference tables containing location details of the subject buildings, along with the original engineers and architects responsible.

Images are printed on 170gsm uncoated paper, allowing deep black-points to be reproduced without ink bleed, and referencing the tactile qualities associated with the washi-type papers used in Japan. Cover printed on 300gsm laminated matte anti-scuff.
